Essential Pet Training Tools Every Pet Parent Needs

So you just got a dog…now what?! Let’s get to training! Training your pet is one of the most rewarding parts of having a pet. Whether you're teaching basic commands, working on leash manners, or tackling behavioral issues, the right tools can make all the difference. From puppies just starting out to older pets in need of a refresher, having the proper equipment is so important for a well-behaved dog. Here’s a list of essential pet training tools every pet parent should have! You can find the whole list of products mentioned by clicking here! Once you’re done, check out my article about Pet Safety Products to make sure your pet is happy and safe :)

Clicker for Positive Reinforcement

A clicker is a small, hand-held device that makes a, you guessed it, clicky sound when pressed. It’s a must-have for clicker training, which is one of the most effective methods for teaching new behaviors. When your dog or cat performs the desired action, you click and follow up with a treat. Over time, your pet learns to associate the click with a reward, making training quicker and more enjoyable. This is a great way to train your dog positively! It works great for our dog :)

Treat Pouch

When training your pet, you’ll want to have treats readily available to reward good behavior. A treat pouch allows you to carry bite-sized treats that you can easily access during training sessions. It keeps your hands free and eliminates the hassle of fumbling for treats in your pocket. We don’t want to keep your well behaved dog waiting! This pouch is great because it holds a lot and comes with a clicker as well!

Long Line for Distance Training

If you're working on recall or teaching commands at a distance, a long line is a great training tool. These extra-long leashes, usually between 15 and 30 feet, give your dog more freedom while still allowing you to maintain control. They are especially useful for practicing recall in open spaces where your dog can explore but still needs to come back when called. This long line is one of our favorites because it comes in bright colors and a variety of lengths.

Harness or Training Collar

The right harness or collar plays a big role in training, especially for dogs that pull on the leash. A front-clip harness helps redirect your dog’s movement, discouraging pulling, while a head collar can provide gentle control over their direction. If you’re training your dog for obedience or leash walking, choosing a comfortable and well-fitting harness or collar is key. We love this one because it is a no pull harness plus it’s reflective! Which is great for those night time walks or training sessions.

Interactive/Puzzle Toys

Training isn’t all about commands and structure—it’s also about mental stimulation. Interactive toys are an awesome way to keep your pet engaged and focused during and between training sessions. Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing balls, and other mentally challenging activities can reduce boredom and encourage problem-solving skills in your pet. It also reduces unwanted behavior since they’ll be too worn out to be naughty ;) Our dog LOVES her interactive puzzle feeder toy. Another great option is this three tiered puzzle feeder. Your dog will love them!

Training Books or Apps

Sometimes the best tool you can have is knowledge. Training books offer valuable insights and step-by-step guidance on how to teach your pet commands and correct behaviors. Whether you’re tackling basic obedience or advanced tricks, having access to expert advice can make all the difference. Here are two of our favorites: Zak Geore’s Dog Training Revolution and Training the Best Dog Ever by Larry Kay.

Training Whistle

A training whistle can be an excellent tool for teaching recall or other commands at a distance. Unlike your voice, which can change in tone and volume, a whistle produces a consistent sound every time. It’s particularly useful for dogs who may be off-leash or far away during training.

Calming Spray for Anxiety

Training can sometimes be stressful for pets, especially in new environments or during challenging exercises. A calming spray can help ease anxiety by using natural ingredients like lavender or chamomile to create a soothing effect. These sprays are great for keeping your dog calm during training sessions, car rides, or even vet visits. Simply spritz the spray on your pet’s bedding, crate, or favorite blanket to create a more relaxed atmosphere.

High-Value Treats for Motivation

When it comes to training, not all treats are created equal. High-value treats are especially tasty rewards that your pet will be more motivated to work for, making them perfect for teaching new or difficult commands. These treats are usually small, soft, and packed with flavor—think of things like bits of chicken, cheese, or special training treats designed to grab your pet’s attention quickly. Keep a stash of high-value treats handy during your sessions to reinforce positive behaviors and ensure faster progress. Our dog goes absolutely crazy for freeze dried treats like these Stewart beef liver treats. If your dog is more of a fish fan, try these Vital Essentials Freeze Dried Salmon Treats.

Training your pet can be a fulfilling journey, and with the right pet training tools, you’ll be well on your way to success. Whether you're starting with basic commands or working on more complex behaviors, each tool serves a purpose in building a positive and rewarding experience for both you and your pet. Invest in quality products that fit your pet’s needs, and you’ll see the results in no time! Good luck!
