The Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist: Essential Products for a Stress-Free Delivery
AGHHH it’s almost here…your due date. Some of us might be SO ready for this, others of us terrified, and maybe most of us are a little of both! Packing your hospital bag for childbirth is an exciting milestone! With a little preparation, you can ensure you have everything you need to make your hospital stay as comfortable and smooth as possible. Here’s a comprehensive list of must-have products to pack, covering essentials for you, your partner, and your new baby. I always packed my bag super early. The nesting bug always got to me super soon into my pregnancies. Whether you’re packing months ahead or the day before, here are some items I would include :) You can find the full list of included items here. For after birth, check out my list of Essential Postpartum Products!
Hospital Bag Essentials for Mom
Comfortable Clothing
Maternity Gown: A loose, easy-access gown can make you feel comfortable and less restricted.
Slippers: These slippers are perfect for walking around the hospital.
Going-Home Outfit: Pack a soft, loose-fitting outfit for your trip home—something you’d wear during your second trimester.
2. Nursing and Postpartum Essentials
Nursing Bra and Pads: Bring a few nursing bras and pads to provide support and prevent leaks. If you prefer disposable ones, I love these from Lansinoh.
Disposable Underwear: Many moms find disposable postpartum underwear to be very helpful.
Peri Bottle: Hospitals usually provide one, but many moms prefer bringing their own for gentle, easy postpartum care. The one I linked is awesome because it has an angled neck!
Toiletries
Lip Balm, Toothbrush, and Toothpaste: Hospital air can be drying, so lip balm is essential.
Face Wipes and Moisturizer: Quick and easy cleansing products help you feel fresh without much effort.
Shampoo and Dry Shampoo: If you don’t feel up for a full shower, dry shampoo is a lifesaver.
Snacks and Hydration
Healthy Snacks: Pack easy, non-perishable snacks like granola bars, nuts, and dried fruit for energy.
Water Bottle with Straw: Staying hydrated is key, so bring a water bottle with a straw for easy sipping. This one is super fun since it has the water tracker on the side! It makes it easier to meet your hydration goals.
Entertainment and Relaxation Items
Tablet or Book: Bring something to help pass the time before and after labor.
Relaxing Music or Podcast: Calming music or a favorite podcast can ease anxiety and help you relax.
Hospital Bag Essentials for Baby
Clothing and Swaddles
Socks and Onesies: Pack a few simple outfits in both newborn and 0-3 month sizes to ensure a good fit. Socks ensure your baby is nice and cozy.
Swaddle Blankets: Soft, breathable swaddle blankets help keep your baby cozy.
Going-Home Outfit: Choose a cute, comfy outfit for your baby’s first trip home.
Diapers and Wipes
Newborn Diapers: Most hospitals provide diapers, but bringing a few of your own might be handy.
Sensitive Wipes: Newborn skin can be delicate, so hypoallergenic wipes are a good choice.
Car Seat
Rear-Facing Infant Car Seat: Make sure it’s correctly installed before heading to the hospital—it's required for your trip home.
Hospital Bag Essentials for Partner/Support Person
Change of Clothes
Bring comfortable clothing, as well as a sweater or blanket in case the hospital is chilly.
Snacks and Water
Pack snacks like protein bars, crackers, and fruit for quick energy boosts.
Electronics and Chargers
Phone and Charger: Ensure the charger has a long cord so it’s reachable from anywhere in the room. It is especially nice to have an extra long charger since you’ll be in the hospital awhile and I’m sure you’ll have lots of people wanting updates!
Camera: For capturing precious first moments, many prefer a digital camera in addition to a phone.
Comfort Items
Pillow and Blanket: Having an extra pillow and blanket can be a comfort boost for your partner during long waits.
Extra Items for Comfort and Convenience
Important Documents
Insurance Card and ID: Bring these along with any hospital registration paperwork to avoid delays.
Birth Plan (if applicable): Have a printed copy for easy reference.
Nipple Cream
For breastfeeding moms, a gentle nipple cream can relieve discomfort.
Essential Oils or Diffuser
If the hospital permits it, calming essential oils (like lavender) in a small diffuser can make the room feel more relaxing.
Towel
Hospital towels can be scratchy, so consider bringing a soft towel for your own comfort.
Hospitals can be bright, so these help create a restful atmosphere.
Packing your hospital bag a few weeks before your due date helps reduce stress and ensures you’re ready for anything. Having these essentials on hand will keep you, your partner, and your new baby comfortable and supported, leaving you more time to focus on welcoming your little one into the world.
